Ghouls, Birthdays and Fireworks
Most of you should have seen my lovely Halloween pictures by now. Twas a very fun evening. Came to Sublime with Witchy Abi and Kitty Zoey, where we met the Devilish Sarah. Sublime was still in the process of being decorated- Nick and Leonna sure did go all out for one night. There were even a few carved pumpkins lighting the placce up- think those were from Sarah and Alex (thanks guys!). Midnight Sausage were playing, also dressed up, and managed to play loads of Halloween-appropriate songs while still keeping the atmosphere lively.
There was a really good turn out of people coming in fancy dress (FYI for fellow Americans- Fancy Dress is the term used here for dressing up in costume, not dressing up in a gown and tux. Strange, I know, but what else do you expect from the Brits?), and I took it upon myself to go around and promote the fancy dress contest we had going that night, best one won a £40 bar tab for the night. There were some really good efforts made, loved the homemade Dice-girl costume. In the end it was the Werewolf that won.
Luckily for me I planned ahead for this night and requested to start work at noon the day after Halloween. I actually ended waking up rather early, but it didn't take long for me to roll over and fall back to sleep and enjoy the extra Z's. Stayed in Thursday night as the weekend was crammed full with Birthday celebrations and I wanted to preserve some energy for it. Friday night we celebrated Sarah's bday, starting with a lovely dinner at Zero Degrees, this micro-brewery in Bristol, then made our way down to Sublime for a few drinks and dancing.
Satruday went for a run with Jaume, felt really good, got hair cut, then met up with friends at the Avon Gorge Hotel in Clifton to celebrate Emma's bday. Now the reason we started way up in Clifton is because Bon Fire/Guy Fawkes night was being celebrated that night as well- a little background on this English holiday- Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of English Roman Catholics which planned to carry out the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I of England, to destroy Protestant rule by killing the Protestant aristocracy, on 5 November 1605 (Wikipedia). Now the 5th of November in England is known as Guy Fawkes Day where typically a large firework display is put on, symbolizing his attempt to blow up Parliament.
Some of you may ever know this well known verse:
“Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder, treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.”
Back to the story at hand, becuase Nov 5th fell on a Monday this year, the city of Bristol decided to have the Firework show on Saturday at the Downs in Clifton. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of the fireworks from the Avon Gorge Hotel but only saw a few small fireworks go off from people's private homes. Realizing we were not going to see much else, we walked to the Racks for a few more drinks, then some of us continued on to Sublime. Midnight Sausage were rockin it as always. Later on the Fish boys were inviting some of us back to their pub to watch this big boxing match that was Live at 1:30am. Watched that, not a huge boxing fan, but this was a good match, more real than most crap you see on TV passed off as "real boxing/wrestling".
Had my first Sunday Roast with Lauren and her friends, quite tasty, then we chilled by the docks, did grocery shopping (which no one in England calls it- they say "going to the food store" or "food shopping"), did another run this time with Alex. Kicked my ass and my body paid for it big time that night. Was hobling around hte flat like an old lady I was in such pain. Yup, that was my weekend. :)
